Cannabis Butter
Butter is one of the most versatile extract mediums. It can be added to most edibles and can be easily portioned for dosage control.
The first step in creating cannabis butter is to decide on your dosage. You can either create a high potency butter and dilute it down when baking, or create a low dosage butter without the need to dilute. I prefer to create a higher potency butter because when working with a cannabis recipe, you can always dilute the cannabis butter with real butter but you can’t just increase the amount of butter a recipe calls for.
Please note: You must first decarboxylate your flower. For more information check out or How to Decarboxylate your Cannabis guide.
1 – Decarboxylate 28 grams of cannabis and melt 1 pound of butter into 1 cup of water.
2 – Grind up decarboxylated cannabis by hand. Don’t over grind.
3 – Stir in ground decarboxylated cannabis into melted butter and water.
4 – Bring the temperature to 160 degrees F for 3 hours. Do not exceed 200 degrees F at any point. You want to be in between 130 degrees F – 180 degrees F.
5 – Place two layers of cheese cloth over a container and secure with an elastic band.
6 – Place metal strainer onto cheese cloth and pour in cannabis, water and butter.
7 – Remove strainer and cheese cloth. Do not be enticed to squeeze the cheese cloth or strainer to increase potency. You will only get a small amount more and it will significantly effect the taste and odor in a negative way.
8 – Place in fridge until completely hardened. This can take 4 hours. Once hard, poke two small holes into the edge of the butter using a skewer. Tilt the bowl and allow the water underneath to drain. Cut around the edges of the bowl with a small knife and the butter should slide out.
